The tariff hike came into effect at 24 customs posts across Tamil Nadu. Motorists past the toll booths from 12 midnight are paying the increased new fares.
It has already been announced that the utility tariff will be increased from Rs. 5 to Rs. 55 at 24 toll plazas in Tamil Nadu under the control of the National Highways Authority. Accordingly, the tariff hike at Chennai-Vanakaram, Surapattu, Pattaraiperumbudur and Nallur toll booths came into effect from midnight.
Motorists were dissatisfied with the 40 per cent hike in tolls at the Nallur toll plaza. New toll collection has also started at the toll plazas at Paranur and Attur near Chengalpattu.
New charges are being levied at Nanguneri toll plaza in Nellai district from 12 midnight. With petrol and diesel prices already rising, motorists say the increase in tariffs has put a heavy burden on them. Freight truck drivers say the rise in tariffs could push up the prices of essential commodities, including vegetables.

தேசிய நெடுஞ்சாலைகள் ஆணையத்தின் கட்டுப்பாட்டின் கீழ் தமிழ்நாட்டில் உள்ள 24 சுங்கச்சாவடிகளில் பயன்பாட்டுக் கட்டணம் 5 ரூபாய் முதல் 55 ரூபாய் வரை உயர்த்தப்படும் என ஏற்கெனவே அறிவிக்கப்பட்டிருந்தது. அதன்படி, சென்னை - வானகரம், சூரப்பட்டு, பட்டரைபெரும்புதூர், நல்லூர் ஆகிய சுங்கச்சாவடிகளில் கட்டண உயர்வு நள்ளிரவு முதல் அமலுக்கு வந்தது. இதில் நல்லூர் சுங்கச்சாவடியில் 40 சதவிகிதம் அளவுக்கு சுங்கக்கட்டணம் உயர்த்தப்பட்டுள்ளதாக வாகன ஓட்டிகள் கடும் அதிருப்தியுடன் கூறினர். செங்கல்பட்டு அருகே பரனூர் மற்றும் ஆத்தூர் ஆகிய இடங்களில் உள்ள சுங்கச்சாவடிகளிலும் உயர்த்தப்பட்ட புதிய கட்டண வசூல் தொடங்கியுள்ளது.
நெல்லை மாவட்டம் நாங்குநேரி சுங்கச்சாவடியிலும் நள்ளிரவு 12 மணி முதல் புதிய கட்டணம் வசூலித்து வருகின்றனர். ஏற்கெனவே பெட்ரோல் - டீசல் விலை உயர்ந்துவரும் நிலையில், சுங்கக்கட்டணத்தையும் உயர்த்தியிருப்பது பெரும் சுமையை ஏற்படுத்தியுள்ளதாக வாகன ஓட்டிகள் கூறுகின்றனர். சுங்கக்கட்டண உயர்வால் காய்கறிகள் உள்ளிட்ட அத்தியாவசியப் பொருள்களின் விலை உயரக்கூடும் என்று சரக்கு லாரி ஓட்டுநர்கள் தெரிவிக்கின்றனர்.
